How a photo turns into a watercolor canvas

The most common question at our bench: what actually happens to my photo? Here is the honest walkthrough, plus the advice we give everyone about choosing the picture in the first place.

What happens after you upload

Your photo lands with our artists, not with a filter. They rework it in the style you chose: classic washes, pastel florals, pencil line art, or the splash technique with its drips and bleeds. Faces stay recognizably yours, backgrounds get simplified or replaced, and small distractions, a stray bag, a photobombing stranger, quietly leave the frame.

Before anything is printed you see a layout preview. This is the moment to catch a misspelled name, swap a date, or ask for a background change. Only after you nod does the piece go to canvas.

Choosing a photo that paints well

Sharp faces matter more than anything else. A slightly awkward photo with clear faces paints better than a beautiful composition where everyone is small and distant. Phone photos are fine, screenshots usually are not.

Good light helps the watercolor keep skin tones honest. Outdoor shade is ideal, harsh noon sun and dim restaurants are the usual troublemakers. And if you want the dog in the painting, make sure the dog is actually looking somewhere near the camera.

Picking a style for the room

The classic wash suits almost everyone, which is why it is style one. The pastel floral frame leans nursery and new mom. Line art is the quiet choice for modern rooms that do not want a loud painting. The splash style is for people who want guests to ask about it.

Sizes run from small desk pieces to statement prints. The honest rule: measure the wall before ordering, not after. A 24x36 above a side table looms, an 8x12 above a sofa disappears.

Worth knowing before you order

  • Every photo piece includes a layout preview before printing
  • Four watercolor styles, from classic wash to splash
  • Background edits and small touch-ups are part of the service
  • Printed on fade-resistant canvas in a US facility

Dig up the photo you keep going back to. If it makes you pause in your camera roll, it will hold a wall.
